Common terms are useful only when their limits are understood.

Audio and Voice Phenomena

EVP: Electronic voice phenomenon—a voice-like sound identified in a recording that was not recognized by listeners at the time. Class labels such as A, B, and C are informal and subjective rather than scientific standards.

Environmental Terms

EMF: Electromagnetic field. EMF meters detect changes in electromagnetic energy, often from wiring, appliances, phones, radios, or other ordinary sources. A change by itself is not evidence of paranormal activity.

Communication Experiments

ITC: Instrumental transcommunication—an umbrella term for attempts to receive meaningful communication through electronic devices or media. Results require careful controls and cautious interpretation.
